Happy 52nd Birthday Malaysia

Monday August 31, 2009

Different but same

By Lydia Teh

Food, festivals, family and fun are the factors that make us wholly Malaysian.

ONE plus one equals one or 1 + 1 = 1. Mathematically this is wrong but according to the biblical concept of marriage, it is right. Husband and wife are to cleave to each other as one.

Though they are male and female with different characteristics, temperament and whatever emotional baggage they bring with them to the marriage, they are one.

‘The ties that bind us go beyond food, though that is arguably one of the strongest ties. Take the sarong. This humble piece of cloth is worn by people of all races. It is the ultimate attire for chilling out at home.’ Lydia Teh (centre)

Using the same analogy, Malays, Chinese, Indians and Others are one under the 1Malaysia concept: 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 1. Though they are of different races and cultural backgrounds, they are one.

1Malaysia is a new slogan but is the concept new? I read that Yasmin Ahmad said something to the effect of “Dat fella copy me-lah.” I can see where she was coming from.

Her commercials and movies promote bangsa Malaysia and they are so unpretentious and down-to-earth that even children can enjoy them.

Sad to say, her passing has left a void unless one of her protégés rises to the challenge as she did to become a worthy successor of P. Ramlee.

Think about it: aren’t we already practising 1Malaysia to a small extent? Let me enumerate some of the ways since we’re so fixated with numbers.

1. Hari Raya is coming. My family and I will be visiting our next door neighbours to share in the joy of the festival.

If we want to feast on rendang and ketupat, we have to go on the first or second day when there’s plenty to eat. But we’re not gluttons. If we could only visit after the good food is depleted, we’d be just as happy with cookies and syrup, though our stomachs might growl for rendang.

But we don’t just share food with each other (we give them Mandarin oranges and groundnuts during Chinese New Year). We share dust and water too. When they renovated their kitchen, dust floated into our kitchen via ventilation holes.

I didn’t cook when the drilling was intense. The last time I checked, dust is not an edible seasoning.

When our house was being repainted and we needed more water power to operate the high-pressure water machine to spray off old paint, our neighbours came to the rescue by letting us tap into their water supply for free.

2. When we go out to eat at the mamak stall, we can see diners of all races tucking into their roti canai and teh tarik. This is the most muhibbah institution in Malaysia.

Where else can you see Malays, Chinese and Indians under one roof (or roofless sometimes) intent on fulfilling one of life’s basic needs? KFC and McDonalds? But they serve Western food.

Mamak has the Malaysian identity chopped all over it. We are united in our love for ghee-laden food and milk-saturated tea. “United we stand, divided we fall” should be paraphrased as “Ghee-nited we stand, tea-vided we fall.”

3. The ties that bind us Malaysians go beyond food, though that is arguably one of the strongest ties. Take the sarong. This humble piece of cloth is worn by people of all races. It is the ultimate attire for chilling out at home.

Its “natural air-con” and simplicity of design makes it versatile. It can be used as a baby sling or a cradle.

I was rocked to sleep on a sarong cradle when I was a baby. My children had a rocking good time too when they visited grandma.

4. There’s a reason why there are so many beggars and charities asking for donations in public places. The generosity of Malaysians overflows its cup. People give, to these and deserving cases highlighted in the media. Malaysians are truly generous.

Despite being 1Malaysians, there will be facets of our lifestyle that are different from each other. That’s unity in diversity for you.

Take food for instance. We enjoy festive goodies such as kuih bangkit and kuit kapit at both Hari Raya and Chinese New Year but lemang will always be associated with Hari Raya and yee sang with Chinese New Year.

Whether Malays, Chinese or Indians, there will be cultural differences on how we eat (what can I say, our national pastime is eating), how we wed, how we bury our dead or how we celebrate a newborn.

Babies are born pure, like white sheets of paper to be painted on. If a Chinese mother threatens her young one to eat his food or the Ah Neh Neh (colloquial for Indian) will catch him, the boy will grow up fearing dark-skinned people.

If a Malay father warns his daughter not to mix with the Chinese or she might get cheated, the girl will eye with distrust those with mata sepet (slit eyes.) Children are colour-blind. It is the adults who teach them otherwise.

The onus is on our young ones to raise another generation to become more integrated: to eat with each other, to give generously of their friendship and concern, to wear Baju Malaysia (which incorporates different elements of each ethnic group’s traditional wear).

In short, to become as well-mixed as rojak, yet maintaining the distinctive flavours that make us different.

Allow me to end with a poem that is a favourite among readers of Honk! If You’re Malaysian, judging from the frequency with which it is quoted in blogosphere:

“Regarding our inherent make-up, is one race more likely to act in a certain way than another? A friend of mine puts it this way:

Kalau tidak malas, bukan Melayu,
Kalau tidak tipu, bukan Cina,
Kalau tidak minum, bukan India.
(If you’re not lazy, you’re not Malay,
If you don’t cheat, you’re not Chinese,
If you don’t drink, you’re not Indian.)

To my friend I say:

I’m Chinese but I’m no cheat,
My friend’s Indian but he’s no drunk,
Another is Malay but he’s no slob,
Chinese, Indian, Malay or Others,
We are who we make ourselves to be,
Not the stereotypes we’re made out to be.
But if we don’t buck the trend,
We’ll forever be stamped.”

Forty-something Lydia Teh is the author of ‘Honk! If You Are Malaysian’. She likes to eat roti canai when money is tight which isn’t surprising as her latest book is ‘Stretching Your Dollar$ and $ense – More than 300 money-saving tips for anyone and everyone’.

my favourite author, Lydia Teh did it again.... *double thumbs up* n a new book by her has been published, i HAVE TO get it a.s.a.p (or, ehemmm, if only i received dis book on d 12th october)....... i can alwiz link myself to her writings which bring d malaysian aura, cynical at times but genuine...

Engineer vs Manager

A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost.
He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below.
He descended a bit more and shouted, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The woman below replied, "You're in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You're between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I am," replied the woman, "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I've no idea what to make of your information, and the fact is I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help at all. If anything, you've delayed my trip."

The woman below responded, "You must be in Management."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman, "you don't know where you are or where you're going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you've no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it's my fault."

NOT my GrAduaTiOn Day

last sunday, i attended several frends' convocation (not as in sit in d hall or wait outside to watch them going up d stage but meet them outside to do some catching up, photo-taking, n gift-giving).. i was equally excited though it wasn't my convocation...

seau yunn, my hostel mate.. officially an accountant/auditor now.... happy for her...

d 2 experienced auditors, my ex-roomie n seau yunn... i hav so many 'monetary specialist' friends, no prob for me if i encountered 'financial prob'

dis is mei xian, a junior from acs, sitiawan... i met her less den 3 times during my undergrad years but was lucky enuff to bump into her before her convocation ceremony.. wouldnt miss a shot with her...

here comes d engineer dude.. my er hu partner who is very philosophical at times but dooesnt speak much..

d juniors, d 1 in costumes were performers... they were performing for d graduation ceremony-d club is so well-know nowadays, well done girls n boys... ooops, d ex-president was there at d bk, dat made 3 'elderly' in d groupie...

dis fella also my ex-president... multi-talented dude who joked all d time... can play a number of instruments, n graduated wif 1st class honours *salute*

final groupie, d orchestra members (young, old n d elderly) wif d graduates.. i m sure d club is proud to produce d 3 engineers who can not only perform well in their studies but contributed a lot to d club...

dats d end of my trip to ukm... below r my frneds' graduations, my bro went on behalf of me (not exactly coz he knw them well too)... cehhh, my bro is so popular nowadays, way popular den me-when i got there, d juniors recognized me by his name not mine... neway, i m glad he's enjoying his uni life....

all d juniors wif their ex-president... nice shot!

zhi ling looked gorgeous... i wore d same colour of robe as she did but her bouquet is way bigger den mine... haha, anyway, nice one....

purple is 'IN' now, science n technology faculty students r lucky to get purple robe... yu ling, another friendly n popular junior i think (look at d number of gifts she received>couldnt even c her hands)...

these 2 were er hu players like me... saw d same people again n again in all d photographs right? they were d performers n sticked together all d time but notice some were missing..

whoeva graduate will look as if he/she is glowing-same goes to dis girl.... a faithful junior, played er hu n joined hostel choir club (wateva i recommended, she was ok-ed wif it)... quite sure she performed very well in her studies...

hmmm, i think i missed out several.. maybe my bro was bz, so he skipped-n i couldnt blog or post their photos... graduation is a once in a life-time occasion, (unless u further ur studies to a higher level) frends n coursemates r there to make it merrier and a memorable 1... hmmm, i didnt get to c most of my coursemates on our convo last year, a lil' miserable but as long as everyone is doing great, we'll get to meet up 1 day-soon, i hope....

Proposal

p-r-o-p-a-s-a-l
i have been hearing dis particular word for 10billion times dis few weeks... from: my students' assignment called 'informal proposal' and just now, a workshop i attended frm 9-5 regarding 'writing research proposal'...
so sick with it... but surprisingly i'm motivated to work on my masters proposal which is to dwell a lil' deeper into my favourite field & link it to edu... n i was grateful d senior lecturers or shud i called them experienced ones gave some idea and voila, i know wat i wanna do n m keen on it....

perhaps now i shud prepare a proposal entitled: d pros n cons of studying locally n oversea...
choices, choices, choices...
y life is full of choices n y are we alwiz caught in some difficult circumstances where we need to decide....

err, y m i rambling away, i hav not even received the official offer letter yet, duhhh.. who knows, i might not b accepted.. n i shall just stick wif my orginal plan which is to do it part-time in ukm (my comfort zone) n work full-time > d ques is can i juggle work n studies, n still score in my masters...

*life is never a bed of roses*

Delicious & Kimchi

officiated my credit card last saturday.... went to Delicious for my 1st lunch in kl after several months.... apparently d 1 is Bangsar is the nicest compared to other outlets according to d kl-ites.. it was my 2nd time there; so i was smart enuff not to order pasta.. instead of spaghetti, i asked for braised lambshank n what can i say *saliva dripping*, it's yummilicious but can feel d fat forming in me, tsk tsk tsk...... ate dis once in a blue moon, besides i m not living in kl so no prob i guess...

min jiun, shi jil and shi jing with their pasta which were indeed delicious.. oni complaint came frm younger ms.chin who said d amount of spaghetti was too little... aunty chin wif her nassi kerabu which looked very nice but she didnt really like d raw vege, & finally me wif my plate *can u c a bone sticking out- dats art*

my the other meal before heading home... we had korean food in mid val... it's kimchi day, though i still couldnt accept (swallow) d original kimchi but loved d hot 1 served in a hot pan... n hmm, i missed my 1st time when they then served dried beancurd as one of their side dishes (i was told dat those side dishes vary frm time to time, depanding on d season but 1 thing for sure, kimchi is served in every meal without fail... those who do not knw how a kimchi taste like, imagine dis, 'some chili paste on an icy cabbage'..
my ex-roomie, lai chin and shi jing, not forgetting me possing happily wif d food.. d hot kimchi soup i ordered was hotter n spicy-er den before... so, dis shall stop me frm craving for korean food til december...

rock?

rock isnt my cup of tea, but i loved dis movie 'school of rock' to d max... i hav watched more den 10times i guess, almost every trip home (dis time is included) i'll automatically choose dis cd n watch it while having lunch... i neva get sick of it; some of d lines, or maybe most of d lines is at my finger tip... it is simply amazing, d kids, zach especially n gordon r my favourite; n oh, jack black is in it, d fat guy is adoroble... it's not a new movie (released way back in 2003) but it is recommended, all thumbs up...

dis entry comes along coz i watched 'overheard', a canto movie starring daniel wu n louis ku-if it wasnt becoz of dis 2 hunks, i wud hav left d cinema.. it was boring though some1 said d storyline is very meaningful (duhhh, i dun find installing interception devices, stock market manipulation, money laundering, innocent people got killed significant).. i told myself once 4 years ago, not to watch any canto movie in d cinema, dis movie proved me right again... by d way, it waas a thriller *yeah, i m so so scared*

emo again...

humans love to listen to compliments > very much a FACT..................
i wouldnt wanna deny, lying is ok (small lie) or u can go beat around d bush, as long as it keeps me happy... sometimes, those 'indirectness' or worst 'directness' would somehow upset me, yes i do knw i couldnt control wat people want to say as mouth is usually used to not only eat but speak......
can u guys give me some 'face' at least....... i've seriously tried my best to please n help every1> as long as i c ppl around me r happy, i will be equally happy...
sadly, i've putting some fake smiles on my face recently, i couldnt smile sincerely.... all d small small things have snowballed n it HuRts!!!!!!!!

btw, til today, i neva hav my lunch or meal or supper wif colleague from d same departement, not oni dat, neva even have a good chat on stuff other den work with any1... no frend, ok fine...
d 1 closest to me would b d unit leaders... i'm just a tutor, nt allowed to teach, just there to guide, so yes i dont knw much in other word stupid..... so, dun ask me anything regarding english, i m not good at it at all, ask d 1 with masters or doing it?? perhaps due to my not-up-to-d-par vocab resulted frm insufficient reading, dats y ppl dun look up n respect me..... damn, my self-esteem level is damn low, lower den u can neva imagine... wat's d use of being a top student who excels in studies, pointless!!!!!!!! graduated wif 1st class doesnt mean u can do well for d rest of ur life... as long as u r good in twisting, turning n convincing, yeah d world wud recognize u....

immature me thought i'll b happy if i got to do wat i love most-teaching-
i miss studying very very badly............(i miss my sitiawan gang so much when i was in ukm; now, i missed my ukm frends freaking a lot)... to b a student is d luckiest thing eva, u hav at least a few true frends who'll b by ur side n 24/7 ready-to-lend-a-hand lecturers... what does a working lady has?? no fren, no help plus being ordered to do dis n dat; yet i neva reject any favour asked by any1, i guess d word 'no' doesnt exist in my dictionary.... tmr onwards, i'll revive 'NO'......
