OK-Wat an Eye Opener

Stumbled upon an article entitled O.K-yup, the 2 alphabets we use all the time.... I find it very intriguing, so do read or at least skim and scan thru the article.

It crops up in our speech dozens of times every day, although it apparently means little. So how did the word "OK" conquer the world, asks Allan Metcalf.

"OK" is one of the most frequently used and recognised words in the world.

It is also one of the oddest expressions ever invented. But this oddity may in large measure account for its popularity.

It's odd-looking. It's a word that looks and sounds like an abbreviation, an acronym.

We generally spell it OK - the spelling okay is relatively recent, and still relatively rare - and we pronounce it not "ock" but by sounding the names of the letters O and K.

Visually, OK pairs the completely round O with the completely straight lines of K.

So both in speech and in writing OK stands out clearly, easily distinguished from other words, and yet it uses simple sounds that are familiar to a multitude of languages.

Almost every language has an O vowel, a K consonant, and an A vowel. So OK is a very distinctive combination of very familiar elements. And that's one reason it's so successful. OK stands apart.

Ordinarily a word so odd, so distinctive from others, wouldn't be allowed in a language to begin with. As a general rule, a language allows new words only when they resemble familiar ones.

Clever coinages may be laughed at and enjoyed, but hardly ever adopted by users of the language.

So it was in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, in the late 1830s, when newspaper editors enjoyed inventing fanciful abbreviations, like "WOOOFC" for "with one of our first citizens" and OW for "all right".

Needless to say, neither of these found a permanent place in the language. But they provided the unusual context that enabled the creation of OK.

On 23 March 1839, OK was introduced to the world on the second page of the Boston Morning Post, in the midst of a long paragraph, as "o.k. (all correct)".

How this weak joke survived at all, instead of vanishing like its counterparts, is a matter of lucky coincidence involving the American presidential election of 1840.

One candidate, Martin Van Buren, was nicknamed Old Kinderhook, and there was a false tale that a previous American president couldn't spell properly and thus would approve documents with an "OK", thinking it was the abbreviation for "all correct".

Within a decade, people began actually marking OK on documents and using OK on the telegraph to signal that all was well. So OK had found its niche, being easy to say or write and also distinctive enough to be clear.

But there was still only restricted use of OK. The misspelled abbreviation may have implied illiteracy to some, and OK was generally avoided in anything but business contexts, or in fictional dialogue by characters deemed to be rustic or illiterate.

Indeed, by and large American writers of fiction avoided OK altogether, even those like Mark Twain who freely used slang.

But in the 20th Century OK moved from margin to mainstream, gradually becoming a staple of nearly everyone's conversation, no longer looked on as illiterate or slang.

Its true origin was gradually forgotten. OK used such familiar sounds that speakers of other languages, hearing it, could rethink it as an expression or abbreviation in their own language.

Thus it was taken into the Choctaw Native American language, whose expression "okeh" meant something like "it is so".

US President Woodrow Wilson, early in the 20th Century, lent his prestige by marking okeh on documents he approved.

And soon OK was to find its place in many languages as a reminder of a familiar word or abbreviation.

But what makes OK so useful that we incorporate it into so many conversations?

It's not that it was needed to "fill a gap" in any language. Before 1839, English speakers had "yes", "good", "fine", "excellent", "satisfactory", and "all right".

What OK provided that the others did not was neutrality, a way to affirm or to express agreement without having to offer an opinion.

Consider this dialogue: "Let's meet again this afternoon."

Reply: "OK."

Compare that with: "Let's meet again this afternoon."

Reply: "Wonderful!" or "If we must."

OK allows us to view a situation in simplest terms, just OK or not.

When someone falls down, the question is not "how well are you feeling?" but the more basic "are you OK?".

And any lingering stigma associated with OK is long since gone. Now OK is not out of place in the mouth of a US president like Barack Obama.

Speaking to schoolchildren in 2009 he said: "That's OK. Some of the most successful people in the world are the ones who've had the most failures."

The word would also easily slip from the mouth of a British prime minister like David Cameron.

And yet, despite its conquest of conversations the world over, there remain vast areas of language where OK is scarcely to be found.

You won't find OK in prepared speeches. Indeed, most formal speeches and reports are free of OK.

Modern English translations of the Bible remain almost entirely OK-free. Many a published book has not a single instance of OK.

But OK still rules over the vast domain of our conversation.

Me at a Prom Nite?

My 'favourite' bunch of kids managed to persuade me to a Prom Nite... I hesitated at first but after considering, I made myself present b'coz I have had many memorable moments with them, besides they'll be graduating... I didn't regret attending it, in fact I did have a lot of fun and of coz I felt 'young' again mixing with them... Their prom nite was nothing like any that I have attended be it in uni (there's only 1 anyway) or school... I had a date who treated me like a QUEEN & several handsome boys asking me for a dance despite my poor dancing skill-I was holding myself back initially but as always after being persuaded (and of coz did not wanna appear 'not sporting') I hit d floor with the naughtiest fella followed by a few others... have I danced before, I couldn't remember b'coz I wasn't a popular girl back in my school... it was FUN doing some nonsensical ballroom dancing!!! how many chances like that would I have in my life?

so, this is my tall, dark & handsome date who look like my younger brother... sigh~

my date was my advisee's boyf's bestfrend... wat a complex relationship.. anyhow, we know each other and are relatively close... my advisee is a proud UTAR product, I am too very proud to be her advisor....

this is the Chairman of the Prom Nite... did I mention d theme? it's Mystical Twilight.. all thanks to this young lady, her coursemates and I had a whole lot of fun that nite...

while this young man here is the vice chairman.. so he played a relatively significant role in making sure the prom nite a success...

my 2 naughty advisees (excluding the vice chairman) and their girlf-they looked so alike, don't they... I am pretty sure they won't exclude me from their fairytale wedding...

my lovely psychology girls...

groupie 1 with the boys... 3 of them are my advisees who 'visit' me frequently & cheer me up whenever they need to... so, who is advising who?

they wanted to look taller than I am, so their wishes were granted...

final groupie with d boys, a good-looking group I supposed... they looked so different I cannot recognise d 1 on my right... d 1 on my left actually walked away with the prom king title-he's d number 1 joker of the batch, his cheekiness in my very 1st class in UTAR is still very vivid...

all of them have d power, particularly their cheekiness to make me laugh non-stop.. I guess they made d right choice, to major in psychology... they are a great bunch of people, minus their laziness... they are now doing their internship, so they won't be around to cheer me up, I kinda miss them already... but I'll miss them more after they graduate...

Back with Bruises

I can't accept d fact dat I actually fell and hurt my knees.... My last fall was more than 10 years ago-if I'm not wrong, it's when I learn to ride a bike... It's ridiculous.... I laugh whenever it crosses my mind... Still can't accept d wound despite d pain it causes me- bending and straightening my legs, going up n down d stairs are nitemares... Couldn't do anything except
TAHAN-I appear as if I am 'badly injured'.

15minutes before I fell, I was:

in an antique car in front of Maritime Museum..

30 minutes, before I fell, I was:

posing on a trishaw, looking very happy b'coz it's my 1st time on a trishaw, sight-seeing from a trishaw... never know I will fell....

anyway, I managed to walk for another 6hours before I clean my wound etc etc.. So, what did I do after I fell?
dropped by the must visit A'Famosa..

and the Stadhuys...

met my dear friend, Chai lao shi and ate satay celup at Jalan Ong Kim Wee..

finally, spent hours at Jonker Street...

and my knees were freaking painful d next day, so we didn't do much but we walked quite a lot...

I kinda hate bathing dis few days, it's as if hundreds of needles poking my knees when water touches me... grrrr... but, I have to shower...

Do pray for my speedy recovery, I need to attend yoga class and I need to drive home.... and of coz I dun wan to appear 'cacat' in front of my new batch of students...

Do U Know why Your Prayers were not answered?

GOD CALLING

God : Hello. Did you call Me?
Me : Called You? No. Who is this?
God : This is GOD. I heard your prayers. So I thought I will chat.

Me : I do pray. Just makes me feel good. I am actually busy now.
I am in the midst of something. (Studying theology!)

God : What are you busy at? Ants are busy too.
Me : Don't know, but I can't find free time.
Life has become like rush hour all the time.
God : Sure.
Activity gets you busy.
But productivity gets you results.
Activity consumes time.
Productivity frees it.

Me : I understand, but I still can't figure out.
By the way, I was not expecting YOU would call.
God : Well, I wanted to resolve your fight for time.
Give you some clarity.

Me : Tell me, why has life become complicated now ?
God : Stop analyzing life. Just live it.
Analysis is what makes it complicated.

Me : Why are we then constantly unhappy ?
God : Your today is the tomorrow that you worried about yesterday.
You are worrying because you are analyzing.
Worrying has become your habit.
That's why you are not happy.

Me : But how can we not worry when there is so much uncertainty ?
God : Uncertainty is inevitable, but worrying is optional.
Me : But then, there is so much pain due to uncertainty. ..
God : Pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.

Me : If suffering is optional, why do good people always suffer ?
God : Diamonds cannot be polished without friction.
Gold cannot be purified without fire.
Good people go through trials, but don't suffer.
With that experience their life becomes better, not bitter.
Me : You mean to say such experience is useful ?
God : Yes.
In every term, Experience is a hard teacher.
She gives the test first and the lessons afterwards.

Me : But still, why should we go through such tests ?
Why can't we be free from problems ?
God : Problems are
P urposeful
R oadblocks
O ffering
B eneficial
L essons to
E nhance
M ental
S trength.

Inner strength comes from struggle and endurance,
not when you are free from problems.

Me : Frankly in the midst of so many problems,
we don't know where we are heading...
God : If you look outside you will not know where you are heading.
Look inside.
Looking outside, you dream.
Looking inside, you awaken.
Eyes provide sight.
Heart provides insight.

Me : Sometimes not succeeding fast seems to
hurt more than moving in the right direction.
What should I do ?
God : Success is a measure as decided by others.
Satisfaction is a measure as decided by you.
Knowing the road ahead is more satisfying than knowing you rode ahead.
You work with the compass.
Let others work with the clock.

Me : In tough times, how do you stay motivated ?
God : Always look at how far you have come rather
than how far you have to go.
Always count your blessings, not what you are missing.

Me : What surprises you about people ?
God : When they suffer they ask, "why me?"
When they prosper, they never ask "Why me?"
Everyone wishes to have truth on their side,
but few want to be on the side of the truth.

Me : Sometimes I ask, who am I, why am I here.
I can't get the answer.
God : Seek not to find who you are, but to determine who you want to be.
Stop looking for a purpose as to why you are here.
Create it.
Life is not a process of discovery, but a process of creation.

Me : How can I get the best out of life ?
God : Face your past without regret.
Handle your present with confidence.
Prepare for the future without fear.

Me : One last question.
Sometimes I feel my prayers are not answered.
God : There are no unanswered prayers.
At times the answer is NO.

Me : Thank you for this wonderful chat.
I am so happy to start the New Day with a new sense of inspiration.
God : Well!
Keep the faith and drop the fear.
Don't believe your doubts and doubt your beliefs.
Life is a mystery to solve, not a problem to resolve.
Trust Me. Live by faith and not by sight.
Life is wonderful if you know how to live.

burning myself to enlighten the others-yeah right, some don't give a damn to me... teaching is not as simple as it appears to be, especially when u r teaching d big buffaloes...
pleasing my colleagues by agreeing to any of their requests-so, who's out there to agree to me??

Student Survey

I used to receive some good comments from my students (majority were from my 1st semester students), on my appearance and some on my voice projection.. I took those and tried to improve... Now, after teaching for more than 10 semesters, I receive some rather negative comments showing how dissatisfy they are to me, again nothing to do with my teaching... So, student survey doesn't affect me much now, but today my H.O.D sent all of us an email regarding student survey and I thought sth serious might have cropped up, to my surprise, it's a youtube link..

Check out how students nowadays comment on their lecturer's teaching....

p/s: Faeiz, if u ever ever get comments like that, do SHARE...
